The Artist

A major contemporary artist, Carroll brings his unique calligraphic technique combined with a deep feeling for his subjects to his art.

A life-long New Englander, Carroll's paintings of flowers, landscapes, and street scenes characteristically reflect the harmony and tradition of his native region.

A graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art, and a respected member of the New England Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society, Carroll spent twelve years as an artist and designer with some of the Boston and Cambridge area's most prestigious advertising firms where he developed his unique style.

In 1969, encouraged by the warm reception that his paintings received in shows throughout New England, and driven by a restless and demanding creativity, Carroll resigned his position as art director and turned to the full time pursuit of his personal aesthetic goals.

Today, after pioneering a number of innovative techniques with watercolors, lithograph and silk screen, he utilizes his finely-honed calligraphic skills to continue expanding his artistic horizons. With his unhackneyed feeling for design, perfect color sense, and most sensitive control over his drawing, he ultimately seeks the beautiful, the quality which excites aesthetic pleasure. A melancholy tenderness pervades his work. These are the paintings that have brought him acclamation and an esteemed place among his peers.

Painter, printmaker, designer, teacher, his infinite variety and versatility are affirmed by the special commissions entrusted to him: a portfolio of paintings and drawings for the Strathmore Paper Company; a series of four collector's plates titled "Floral Heirlooms", produced by Hutschenreuther China Company, Germany; a series of twelve limited edition lithographs titled "The Flowers of the Year Miniatures" produced for the American Horticultural Society and The Franklin Mint.

His most recent commissions include "Main Street" and "Walden Street Concord" for Renjeau Gallery, Concord; a "Rare and Fine Wine" poster for Channel 2 Boston; "Natick Center" for the Frame Shop and Gallery, Natick; "Wellesley Square" and "Wellesley Town Hall and Duck Pond" for the Page Waterman Gallery, Wellesley; the "Nutcracker Still Life" for the Boston Ballet; and "U.S.S. Constitution Overlooking Marblehead Harbor" for the Arnould Gallery of Marblehead.
